The book begins with a sample application that has only a command line user interface, runs on a single system, has no persistence mechanism for its data, and has not facility to interoperate with other programs. In gradual step-by-step evolution, this application grows to a rich user interface with a web-centric architecture using Servlets, JSP, and XML. The book explores persistence options including Serialization, JDBC, and Java Data Objects. It also shows how Enterprise JavaBeans can be used to deploy the application in an Application Server. The book is very code-rich, with example programs throughout and on the CD. The book assumes only a basic knowledge of Java programming; all of the fundamental technologies you need to know, such as XML, Servlets, and Enterprise JavaBeans, are covered in a logical progression.

This is a well presented walk through the world of J2EE design and programming for the novice to intermediate Java user. Yawn presents a simple application that is expanded in each chapter as new concepts are introduced. All of the examples are provided on an enclosed and it helped to be able to run them in parallel while trying to understand the material in the various chapters. I highly recommend it. Buy Now!

It has been a couple of years since I read this book, but I’m sure most of it is still relevant. It’s definitely one of the first books you should get if you’re interested in web analytics. It’s one of those books you can go back to and use as a reference when you need valuable input.
